Commercial Mortgage Broker Job, Sydney

Sydney CBD · Full time · Commission only · Posted 9 September 2026

Ardent Capital Group is a commercial finance brokerage in Sydney. We started in 2016, we have settled more than a thousand loans, and we have closed over $2B worth of finance for our clients. We are hiring one more broker.

The Role at a Glance

  • Location: Level 8, 171 Clarence St, Sydney NSW 2000;
  • Office days: One to two a week, ideally Wednesday and Thursday, which is when most of the team comes in. Work from home the rest of the week, and come into the office whenever you want to;
  • Pay: Commission only. No base and no cap. Many of our brokers have earned more than $150,000 + trail in their first year with us;
  • Structure: You operate under the Ardent Capital Group banner with your own ABN;
  • Experience: One to two years as a mortgage broker, with strong commercial and residential experience;
  • Reporting to: Nick Chong, Director.

What You Would Be Writing

You would write across everything this business covers rather than one product line. Plenty of brokers pick a lane and stay in it. We would rather you could look at a client's business, the building they trade from and the loan on their house, and know which one to solve first.

  • Commercial property finance: owner-occupier purchases, investment property, mixed use, and self-managed super fund structures;
  • Residential home loans: purchases and refinances, for business owners with messy income and for straightforward PAYG clients. These are written under Rateseeker, our sister brand, which is where the residential side of the business sits;
  • Business lending: acquisitions, growth capital, partner buy-ins, overdrafts and working capital;
  • Construction and development finance: owner-occupier builds, fitouts, land, townhouses and apartment projects;
  • Equipment and asset finance: vehicles, plant and practice equipment, secured against the asset;
  • Refinancing: repricing, cash out, and consolidating a client's loans into one place.

Who We Are Looking For

One to two years as a mortgage broker. You have taken deals from first phone call to settlement, you have had a valuation come in short, and you have had a client go quiet on you at the worst possible moment. That experience matters more to us than any qualification.

You need commercial experience. This is not a seat where you learn commercial from the ground up, so you should have written commercial deals and know how a commercial credit team reads one. You need strong residential experience alongside it, because you will be writing home loans under Rateseeker at the same time. The training carries on from there, on structure, lender appetite and the parts of the market you have not touched yet.

  • Self agency. You know how to triage your attention and efforts to prioritise the work that needs to be done. Nick will check in on you but not micromanage you;
  • You like the hunt. Finding the deal, framing it, working it through to a yes and closing it. If that part of the job drains you rather than fires you up, this is the wrong seat;
  • Emotional intelligence. Some borrowers want you on the phone every second day. Others want space until there is news. Knowing which is which, and adjusting without being asked, is part of the client dance;
  • Hunger. You want to earn and you are willing to put the hours in to get there;
  • Pride in the work. The file is tidy, the client knows where things stand, the numbers are right. You want the best outcome for the borrower rather than the quickest one to settle;
  • Ego in check. Confidence closes deals and you should be proud of what you write. What we look for alongside it is someone who can put their hand up when something goes wrong and take a piece of feedback well. Everyone here has had a deal fall over. You own it, you learn from it, and you get better.

How You Are Paid

Commission only. Every broker at Ardent is, including the ones who have been here longest. There is no base salary and there is no ceiling on what you can write.

You would operate under the Ardent Capital Group banner with your own ABN. The brand, the leads, the systems and the licence you write under are Ardent's. The ABN is yours.

We have had brokers earn more than $150,000 + trail in their first year with us. That is what the model does for someone who works. It is not a guarantee and we will not dress it up as one. What you earn tracks what you write.

We are direct about this up front because you should decide it before anything else. If you want a salary that arrives whether or not the month went well, take a role somewhere that offers one.

What We Provide

  • Consistent leads. You are not starting from a cold list and building a book from nothing. Enquiries come in and they get distributed, and anything you bring in yourself is yours as well;
  • Ongoing training. Structure, lender appetite, and how to present a deal so a credit team can say yes to it. You learn commercial from people who have been doing it for years;
  • The infrastructure. CRM, aggregation, compliance, marketing and the systems behind them, so you spend your day writing loans instead of chasing admin;
  • Professional indemnity insurance, covered by us;
  • Work from home three to four days a week, with trust and freedom to run your own diary. Nobody monitors your calendar or counts your hours.

Qualifications

No tertiary qualification is required for this role. We have never found a resume that reliably predicted how someone would perform, and a degree is not a signal we weight.

You will need the Cert IV and Diploma in Finance and Mortgage Broking to write loans under our licence, which anyone already broking will hold. That is the only box.

What we actually want to know is who you are. What you have had to get through. Where the grit came from. Why you do this work rather than something else.

Culture

We are a small team and we genuinely like being around each other, which is why the office days sit together on a Wednesday and Thursday rather than scattered across the week.

Mutual respect is the base of it. Everyone here is capable and nobody needs to be told twice. Honest and sincere outcomes for clients, always. We say no to deals that are not right, we tell a borrower to wait when waiting is the better move, and we do not push a product to hit a number.

We are serious and professional about the work, but we do not take ourselves too seriously. It is a funny team. There are running jokes most weeks and a fair bit of nonsense in between the calls, and the office is a good place to be on a Wednesday and Thursday. You are also welcome to have a drink or two with the team, but it's not expected.

We celebrate wins properly. A deal that took eight months to get over the line deserves more than a message in a group chat, and the person who wrote it should hear about it from everyone.

Constant improvement runs alongside all of that. Feedback goes in every direction and nobody sits above it. Mistakes get owned, reflected upon, learned from, and left behind.

How to Apply

Email nick.chong@ardentcapital.com.au with the subject line “Commercial Mortgage Broker Job Application”. Attach a resume if you have one, though we will spend longer on what you write than on what is listed.

Do not send your job application to any email address other than nick.chong@ardentcapital.com.au.

Tell us roughly what you have settled in the last twelve months and across which products, then answer these four questions:

  1. What do you like to do outside of work?
  2. How do you like to relax?
  3. What is the favourite deal you have worked on, and what made it that one?
  4. What is the worst deal you have worked on, and what did you take out of it?

Be as honest as you can, and write the answers yourself. No AI. We would rather read your own writing than something polished that tells us nothing about you.

One small test of whether you actually read this post and pay attention to detail. Include the word dog, cat or banh mi somewhere in your email.

The process from there is a phone call, then a coffee or a video call with Nick.

We read every application ourselves. If you are currently with another brokerage, the conversation stays between us.

We may get an overwhelming number of applications, so please be patient. If we do not get back to you, do not take it personally. It's because we are incredibly busy.
